Research Site
For this pilot project, Melaka River, Langkawi, Kedah, Peninsular Malaysia is selected (Figure 1.8). Langkawi, normally known Langkawi Permata Kedah or the Diamond of Kedah. It is 30 kilometres off the mainland coast of northwestern Malaysia and Langkawi is one of the famous tourist attraction for its beaches and duty free shopping spots.
The study area experiences tropical monsoon climate with high annual temperature of between 24°C to 33°C. Raining season normally occcurr from April to October and Dry season from November to March. Annual Rainfall is averages at 2500 milimetres.
The major land uses in the catchmetn are predominantly for agriculture (65%) which covers mostly paddy fields and forest reserve in the upstream (35%) (Figure 1.9). The total catchment of Melaka River, Langkawi is approximately 74.8km2 with the length of Sungai Melaka at 8.8 kilometres and width around 20 to 28 metres (Figure 1.10). Major tributaries of the study area are Agong River, Limbung River, Bukit Kemboja River, Saga River, Kok River, Ulu Melaka River, Badin River and Renggot River.
